The Old Mission Mausoleum across from WSU at 3424 E. 21st Street includes the graves of my mother Ruth Jane Green and father James A. Green Jr. and the grave of my uncle Charles R. Mayfield. The associated cemetary complex includes the graves of John W. Mayfield, his friend Doris Ruth Peterson, and the graves of Harold E. Mayfield and Golda Mayfield, my maternal grandparents. The Mausoleum rock exterior may be composed of greenish "Budhapura Grey" sandstone. The graveyard itself includes a monument placed by the Masons to "that bright, shining realm above where love never dies", holding an open book high at its summit. Grandfather Mayfield was a Mason and 6'1" tall. I think perhaps Dad married his daughter to get our size up, as recommended by his fraternity brothers at WSU. Grandma Mayfield used to say that Wichitans were "buried crazy" until they came, which reminded me just a little of Kruschev's banging his shoe in the UN, hollering that "We'll bury you." The shape of the Mausoleum across from WSU reminds me of the central peak in "Flash Gordon" from
Deadline at Noon (video). Mom resembled Dale Arden from the movie. The average height of a US soldier in World War II was 5'8". Dad was 5'9.5", but all of his boys were at least an inch taller.
