![]() Excited Nuclear Dragon Over St. James Bay in Canada Turns Away from East Coast Sex. Proton-21, Kiev, Ukraine: Fusion Power & Amazing Stories Proton-21's Electro Dynamics Lab claims to induce thermonuclear fusion in small buttons
of material 1-10 microns in diameter via bombardment with an electron beam. I suppose that by mounting
such targets on heat exchanger plates motion-scanned under the beam with robotic apparatus, a
practical fusion power plant could be constructed. This kind of design allows electron beam power to feed back through the heat exchanger into the line along with any generated thermonuclear power, tending to maximize device efficiency. Energetic reactions
featuring no radioisotope waste products have been observed, according to Proton-21, so that such
a fusion power plant would be non-radioactive and safer than present nuclear installations. With a properly curved surface for the targets, the beam may be moved instead of the plate, so that
robotics would merely serve to feed in new target plates for the beam. However, one must be careful to choose target material for a collectively exothermic reaction, since the converse, truly "cold fusion", is possible. Remember the curve of binding energy, peaked at iron! Why, perhaps with iron targets, a nuclear refrigerator could be constructed that absorbs far more energy than the beam provides! In any case, it should be possible to run a steam turbine connected through the heat exchanger by merely upping the beam strength, so that one could always appear to generate power according to casual students of matters. An electron-beam machine configured like the one I describe above might function with something like Shiva's ablation-oriented pellets that were imploded by laser beams, and perhaps undesired fusion neutrons that generate radioactivity in Shiva and Tokomaks could be avoided. - James A. Green, August 2004. |
